We are a casual group professional artists, art students and hobbyist that meet at the North Park Recreation Center every Thursday from 10am to 1pm and Saturday mornings from 9am to 12noon to practice in classical life drawing with a live model.

From first time beginners to seasoned pros, everyone is welcome, but you must be 18 years of age or older.   This is an open studio drawing/painting group, so there is no instructor. No photography of the model is allowed, not even from your cell phone.  We provide chairs and tables, but you must bring your own art supplies.   If painting with oils, “Gamsol” or odorless Turpenoid are recommended.  Currently space is limited so first come first serve.

We draw/paint in 20 minute intervals with breaks in between for the model; starting with 2 minutes gesture poses (10 poses); then 5 minute poses (2 of these) and a 10 minute pose; rounding off the rest of the session with 6 poses at 20 minutes a pose until the scheduled end time.   However, the last Saturday of every month is 20 minutes of gestures followed by a single long pose for the rest of the morning (broken down into 20 minute intervals to give the model a break).

The North Park Recreation Center is located at 4044 Idaho St, between El Cajon and University Avenue and parking is free (but can be a challenge sometimes).  But it cost $6 even to attend.  This is CASH ONLY, NO CHECKS, NO CREDIT OR DEBT CARDS.  Please try and bring even change for speed and convenience.

We now have a listing at artmodelbook.com.  Check them out, it’s a great resource for finding more figure drawing groups.

  1. Good day! I learned of your group through a local professional artist. I am looking to support my 16 yr old son in his endeavors to pursue an education in art. His desire is to become a character animator or illustrator for Disney, Pixar or the like. He has always loved to draw, and now needs to hone in on his figure drawing skills to beef up his portfolio. He has recently taken a workshop up at LCAD on figure drawing. I signed a permission slip for him to attend, and was wondering if you can offer the same flexibility on the age requirement with your group? I plan to have him partner with a professional artist at these studio sessions. Thanks for your reply!

    • Thank you for taking an interest in our drawing group. Unfortunately, there are no exceptions to our age limit. You must be at least 18 years of age to attend. It’s not just our policy, but many of the models as well. Most models we work with will not model nude in front of a minor.

    • A drawing board is just another term of clipboard. They come in various sizes. You don’t need a special pencil or paper, just bring whatever you are comfortable with. The only thing that is required is that you must be of at least 18 years of age or older and NO PHOTOGRAPHY NOT EVEN FROM YOU CELL PHONE.

  14. Hey,

I’m interested in attending the Thursday open drawing. You have tables and chairs, but do I need to bring a board to draw on?
